Indoor Herb Garden

So it is December. It was hard to say good bye to all the fresh vegetables and herbs you grew all season long. Now you are all cooped up in the house, itching to start a gardening project? Why not give this indoor herb garden a try? All you need is a glass jar or a mason jar, sunlight and the goold o’ H2O!

Growing herbs in water

Herbs are pretty easy to grow in water. One big benefit growing in water vs in soil indoors is you will not have a problem with fungus ghats.

If your outdoor herbs are still alive, you can trim a branch and submerge it in water. This will also work with the store bought herbs. Plants will develop roots in water if you just give them time.

You don’t have to fill the jar. Some prefer using bottled water. If you choose to use tap water, let it sit for 24 hours. Be sure to snip off leaves that will submerge under water. This will encourage more root growth. Place the container where it gets most sun. It doesn’t have to be full sun. If you don’t have that option, consider a grow light.

One thing to point out, you can grow herbs in any container. Using a clear glass jar will allow you see the root progress, oh so rewarding. You can also see if you need to change the water to avoid algae from developing. This will depend on the herb you are growing as well.
