If you are looking for fast and easy Christmas Decoration ideas, Sutherlands has all the supplies. The first stop for the main material is in our door/millwork department. Let’s grab some door shims!

Things you will need:
- Door shims (small and big)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Paint and stain (or spray paint)
- Paint brush
- Small hooks
- String lights (optional)
- Ornament (optional)

We made different size trees out of the smaller shims. They are thinner and perfect for making a mini tree village. We love this project as you can make it as small or as big as you want.
Place a ruler or a piece of wood to make sure both sides are on an even surface. The shim’s thickness is gradual from thick to really thin towards the other end. First start stacking the shims by pointing down the thicker end as pictured. Start layering it up to your desired height and width. Turn both sets of shims and connect to make the tree.

Now let’s make a roof! The last layer on top we flipped the thicker side upwards to make the top more sturdy.

Once you finish assembling the tree, start the hot glue gun. Turn the stack back over flat and glue one side (right let’s say) at a time. We suggest gluing the left side next to the right one to make sure each layer is lined up.

For the bigger tree, we used the contractor wood shims. They are bigger and have very neat color variation. For this big tree, we used an entire box of them. It is quite impressive!

You can easily use spray paint for this project. It is rather cold outside here, so we opted for applying gloss paint indoors.

We ended up applying Cherry stain to our big tree. We love the rustic look of it.

The big tree is perfect to string some lighting to it. Flip the tree and attach the hooks on the back side. Make sure the hooks are facing outward so they can hold the wire. We decided to add a small ornament to the peak of our little tree village using the ornament wire hook.

You should be able to stand the little trees on their own. We laid the big tree against the artwork. If you want it to stand on its own, we recommend attaching a piece of wood to the base or you can place it in containers that will keep it sturdy and upright.
This simple project can be fun to do with your little reindeer too. Isn’t that what the holiday is all about? Merry Christmas from us all at Sutherlands.
