How to Make a Hanging Basket Sphere

Published on

There is a hanging basket and then there is a hanging basket shpere! That is how you can up your gardening game. We are sure you have seen them in public display made by professional florist. We decided to give this a try. Join us!

Things you will need:

Remove the chains from both baskets and fill them with potting soil.

To put both together, the process is similar to flopping over a cake out of a pan with a cooling rack. Slip a piece of cardboard of top of one half with your hand securing the paper flip it over and place on top of the other half basket. Slowly slide it out the cardboard in between. Don’t worry if you will loose some soil in the process.

Secure the 2 wired baskets with zip ties and cut off excess.

We recommend using a really sharp and small scissors to make holes in the coconut liner. They are very dense. Make a small cut first and use your finger to push through till you can touch the soil. You don’t want the opening to be too big.

Using a small bedding plant are best for this project. We used our popular 6-pack bedding plants. You can add trailing type plants like wave pentunias, sweet potato vine, verbena, vinca vine, creeping jenny, the list goes on! This is ideal for strawberry plants as well.

You can mark on the liners where you want to place the plants. Be sure to spread them out evenly. Create a zig zag pattern as best as you can. You can fill in more soil in the opening if you don’t think the root will make contact with the soil. We noticed the top section require more soil. It might be quite messy but all extra dirt will be all washed away.

Once you are done with one half, slowly flip it over and start planting on the other side. Once you hang this up, you will have more opportunity to fill in bare spots and add to the bottom of the planter.

Cut a hole on the top for easy watering. We grabbed a 5" pvc and drill small holes all over it. Insert right throw. This step is not neccesary however.

Reattach the chains. We used both sets of the chains since they get a lot heavier with both attached.

You will need a heavy duty shepeard hook. We recommend post-mount hooks or a strong tree branch to hold the weight. Give it plenty of H2O and watch it fill up. Have fun and bragging right when your friends and family said “how do you do that?!”.
