Concrete Pumpkin

Published on

Concrete planters are popular these days. They are generally more expensive than plastic materials. We have a way to make it affordable. Let’s try this project using the traditional halloween candy bucket as our mold!

Things you will need:

Why choose Maximizer vs other types? Maximizer is a professional-grade concrete mix. It is formulated with lightweight aggregates, delivering easier handling and mixing with less effort.

As for the best tool to mix concrete, we recommend using a mortar hoe. Perforated blade allows material to flow freely for easier mixing. Extra long handle exerts less strain on your back and provides extended reach. You can, however, use a cement mixer attachment to the drill but keep in mind concrete will get heavier as you mix. Good ol‘ shovel works too.

Tape up the bottom hole of the bucket with duct tape and remove handle.

Start mixing the concrete with water. You want a consistency of thick oatmeal and it should hold its shape.

Start filling up the bucket. We decided to make this a planter instead of a solid pumpkin. As you are filling it, push the cup in to the desired depth. Also tap the whole pumpkin to release the bubbles and to let the concrete set as you go for a smoohter surface. Don’t over fill it before placing the cup in place. (Ha a little physics in the works here).

The cup will want to float up. Place a heavy object inside to keep it down and centered.

Once dry, slice the plastic mold in strips and peel them half way down as they go. You will eventually be able to peel it right off!

How neat is that! We did not mind the rough edges on the top as the plant will cover it. You can try to smoothen it with a small spade in earlier process.

You can spray paint or stain this as well. If you use this outside, you need to weatherproof it with concrete sealer. You can drill holes for drainage if you were to put in live plant in it. Using artificial plants/greenery is ideal especially for indoor decoration. Happy Halloween everyone!
