Published on

If you lack ample space for in-ground planting, you are more likely to choose container or raised bed gardening instead. As new planting is about to start, a big question is whether you should reuse your old potting soil.

Of course the fastest way is to just start with a whole new batch of fresh soil. Over time your best option is to give them a fresh start. However, there is a way to bring nutrients back to your old soil. Sutherlands recommends trying the soil amendments. We will go over a few options.

Aging soil has depleted much of the nutrients essential for new plants to flourish. Have you ever attempted to grow plants in the same spot, only to discover that the following season yields different results? This issue also extends to potting soil. Fortunately, there are several methods to revitalize the soil.

If you enjoy the science, you can use a ph level meter or a soil tester to help determine what your soil is lacking. Many come with useful guide to determine what ph levels you need for different plants.

One of the easiest way is to add composting or ready made compost and manure to the existing soil.

If you've observed heaviness in oil-soaked soil, make sure to remove any old rooted plants. You can also consider using other soil amendments like perlite or vermiculite. These lightweight, mineral-based materials enhance aeration and drainage. Incorporating perlite into your potting mix is a simple method to enhance soil quality. This practice helps prevent soil compaction and boosts drainage and aeration, providing ample room for root growth. Additionally, vermiculite is commonly added to soil mixes to improve water retention.

When rejuvenating old soil, it's important to remember to avoid introducing diseases that were present from the previous growing season, as they may linger in your soil.

And certainly, if you are needing to add more soil, Sutherlands carries a wide variety of potting soil from Miracle Gro packed with ready rich nutrients and many organic soil.

Happy planting!
