Repurpose Coasters from an Old Tree

Published on

As much as we hate to cut down a tree, this one must go. One of our staff member family planted this tree since they built their house. 20 some years later, she got too big and outgrew the space. It must be cut down. It is bitter sweet as the kids said “we grew up with that tree.” So we thought they could enjoy it a bit longer with a repurposing project.

It was quite a task to cut it down. First branches are all trimmed down with a reciprocating saw. The big trunk slowly chiseled down with a chainsaw. Using a rope and pulley, the tree fell away from the house. When in doubt, it is best to get a professional.

A significant section of the tree has been removed, creating a piece large enough to be made into a coaster. Be cautious of tree sap; you may want to wear gloves. We are unsure of the type of spruce and how its color will ultimately appear. Using a jointer, the outer layer is trimmed away. This wood has the potential to look quite impressive. We processed it through the jointer several times to eliminate rough edges and large knots.

On the band saw, indicate the preferred thickness for your coasters and carefully cut them into slices. While a reciprocating saw can be used, the band saw is the better choice for this thickness. To our surprise, this was a red spruce with a vibrant center.

If you prefer smooth edges, you can remove the bark off with a saw.

Sand thoroughly before the next fun step, adding stain.

Applying stain not only aids in waterproofing but also enriches the wood's color. After testing several stain options, we decided that clear polyurethane is the most effective for highlighting the natural wood's hue. The darker option features a rich mahogany color.

These coasters are ideal for drinks or even potted plants. Additionally, they allow you to appreciate the tree in a unique way. Our staff member intends to gift these to their children as a cherished reminder of the tree they grew up with.
