Rabbits are Eating My Plants!

Published on

The tranquility and joy of gardening can quickly transform into a stress fest when you realize that all your hard work has turned into a buffet for rabbits.

Sutherland's will explore various strategies to protect your garden and deter those pesky fuzz balls from invading your yard.

To begin, aim to eliminate any potential makeshift habitats. Branch piles or logs can easily transform into cozy little homes. Fill in abundant holes around your property. Maintain your lawn by regularly mowing, as tall grasses provide excellent hiding spots. If feasible, remove any unused overhead areas that could serve as shelter.

Your edible garden is their “All You Can Eat” buffet! There are a few ways you can go about protecting your crops.

FENCING

It is advisable to use garden fencing with mesh that is 1 inch or smaller. You can find a variety of options at your local Sutherlands.

Galvanized garden fencing features graduated spacing, with smaller openings at the bottom for enhanced protection.

Deterrent product

Another way you could attempt is trying to deter them with this 3-plan as suggested by our partner from Liquid Fence: Smell, taste and fear.

These products are commonly harmless to plants and animals when used and stored as directed. Sutherlands carries different types of product made to specifically deter rabbits.

Live trap

This is considered the most humane approach. Using live traps requires patience. It could also be challenging in terms of where to reallocate them away from your yard.

If you want to give it a try, this might be helpful. This is the Top 10 Animal Trapping Tips from our partner, the Havahart® Community.

Lastly, consider deterring them from your yard by planting rabbit-resistant plants. Varieties with strong aromas, such as ornamental onions or fragrant lilacs, are known to be among their least favorites. Our friend from Proven Winners has compiled some useful plant lists you may want to check out, including various plants and shrubs.

Sutherlands offers many of these preventive products. Our knowledgeable experts are ready to help you find the best solution for dealing with your furry nuisance neighbors.
