Cactus ROCKS!

Published on

Summer is officially here. Are your kids saying “I am bored” yet? This project might keep them entertained while giving you another neat home decor.

Things you will need:

First, find the right size rocks and the pot. They should be proportionate to each other. We used a bit bigger rock for this 6" clay pot. It holds about 8 cacti. Look for more oval-shaped rocks just like the real cactus pads.

If you make this with a big group of people, spraying the base color will be faster. Use several different hues of green for a contrasting effect. You can use craft paint to brush the color on just as easy.

After the base color is dry, gather different colors of craft paint to start drawing the texture of the cacti. We used different shades of green, white, cream and yellow. We recommend looking for cacti illustration if your little artist needs inspo. You don’t want them to to start looking like easter egg decorations. You will find different kinds of cacti with amazing texture.  If your little artists are skillful, let them experiment. Use a small paint brush. For making small dots or x marks, you can use the end of the brush or even a toothpick.

Do you know that real cactus blooms require two things: cooler temperatures and long nights. They need between 14-16 hours of uninterrupted darkness and 8 hours of daylight for between 3 - 6 weeks to set flower buds.

So let’s make some flowers. We decided to dye the artificial white rose buds using pink craft paint diluted in water. Let them soak for a few hours and they look as good as real cactus flowers.

Fill the clay pot with river pebble and place all the painted cacti on top. If you want to display this on all sides, you will have to paint both sides of the rocks. Once they are in place, glue the flowers on a few rocks.

Adorable, don’t you think!? What a fun, cute little craft. Display in any room, show off on the patio or front porch! If you want to grow real plants, many Sutherlands stores have all the supplies you need to get them growing. Cacti, potting mix, succulent food, rocks and planters for the indoors.
