Back-to-School Craft

Do you know why apples are associated with school?

There are a few speculations on the origin of this tradition. It could date back to the 18th century tradition in Europe. In America, children in the old days gave teachers apples because the families are often responsible for housing and feeding frontier teachers.

To encourage this gesture of appreciation, your kiddos might want to spend some time before school start making a teacher’s gift for their first day of school.

Things you will need:

Choose corks that are similar in size and shape. We suggest mapping them first to visualize the shape of your apple. The size of the apple is totally up to you. Start with the middle section to determine how you will gradually stack them up and down. That way you will see how big your apple will be.

Heat up the glue gun. Apply glue along the side of the cork and attach the next piece. Make sure the edge is even. Lay it on a flat surface and push down to make sure it lays flat. For the longest width, we glue a few at a time first before connecting the whole role together. You can also lay it on the table and start adding each one.

Once each row is all connected. You can start assembling by applying glue in between each row where the corks touch.

You can add the stem now or after painting. You might need to find something to support the stem while drying. We laid ours against the edge of the table.

Let’s make this a red delicious! What is your favorite kind of apple?
