Which Type of Washing Machine is Best?

Published on

Are you in the market for a new washing machine? There are many different choices out there when it comes to washing machines. Is a traditional top-loader what you want...or maybe a front-loader or a high efficiency top-loader? There are pros and cons when it comes to each of these 3 types of washing machines.

Front-Loading Washer Pros:

    • If you have a small laundry room, a front-load washer is a good fit, this washer can be stacked

    • It has a large capacity and allows you to wash more items at once and bulky items

    • It is most energy efficient since its wash cycle uses less water

    • Its high spin cycle takes out more moisture from the wet loads, cutting back on drying time

Front-Loading Washer Cons:

    • These can be more expensive than top-loading washers

    • Wash cycles times can be longer than other types

    • Because of the design, water can get stuck inside causing a musty odor

Top-Loading Washer Pros:

    • Top-load washer is a good height so you do not have to bend as much when putting clothes in and taking them out

    • Some will give you the option to add laundry during the cycle

    • Wash cycles are shorter

    • The likelihood of musty odors like front-load washers is very low

    • The control panel is easy to use

Top-Loading Washer Cons:

    • Cleaning performance is not great for heavily soiled clothes or full to the top loads

    • The tub is smaller, therefore will not hold bulky items, like comforters

    • You cannot stack top-load washers

    • More water can remain in the washer after a spin cycle, which can lengthen the dry time

High Efficiency Top-Loading Washer Pros:

    • High Efficiency washers, or HE, do not have an agitator in the middle. This will help to accommodate larger loads and bulkier items

    • It uses less water and only fills part way to allow room for the load to tumble, saving energy

    • No musty odors

    • HE models are affordable unless you add extras or a high tech design

High Efficiency Top-Loading Washer Cons:

    • The cycles can take a while to complete, like front-loaders

    • They cannot be stacked

The best thing when choosing is to take all of these pros and cons into consideration. Think about what configuration would work for your household and for the size of your laundry room as well. We carry all 3 types of washers. Sutherlands can help you decide which one is right for you!
