Safety Tips for Hand and Power Tools

Published on

It is important to take the proper safety precautions when using both hand tools and power tools. If used improperly, both could cause injury. If you use protective equipment and the proper work practices, you should have no problem using the tools you need without injury.

The first steps in power tool or hand tool safety is to make sure you have the proper protective equipment. At a minimum, you will want some sort of eye protection. Whether it be glasses or goggles. This is the best way to ensure that your eyes are safe and protected from any debris or mishap that could occur. Along the lines of having protective equipment, having gloves will help prevent cuts and other impacts to your hands that could be caused when using tools. Safety shoes is another protective gear that would be beneficial to have.

Now that you have the proper safety gear, using the tools properly will also help keep you safe while working with either hand tools or power tools. Following proper work practices is crucial to staying injury free! There are certain things to know about the hard tools you will be using. When using a wrench, choose one that properly fits the fastener you are wanting to turn. Never substitute pliers for a wrench when trying to turn nuts and bolts. Never alter a wrench or any hand-held tool. You should use it in its current state. You also should inspect tools periodically for any damage or severe wear and tear that can occur over time. Also always use non-sparking wrenches when in the presence of anything that is flammable and capable on catching on fire.

When using hammers or any type of a striking tool, always make sure you use one that is of proper weight and size for the job you are working on. Do not use a hammer if the handle of it is damaged in any way or loose. The same rule is also true for screwdrivers when working on a project where a screwdriver is needed, make sure that the screwdriver you use properly fits the slot of the screw. Never use a screwdriver for anything other than its intended use. Don't use one as a pry bar, chisel, punch or a scraper. A good idea when trying to use a screwdriver in a tight space is to use a magnetic or screw-holding screwdriver. This will help prevent any injury to hands or fingers. If there is enough room, use both hands when working with a screwdriver. One to guide the tip and the other to turn the handle. Tighten screw with both hands.

Now when it comes to power tools, these present more hazards than hand tools. The main thing to remember with any power tool is to first read the owners manual! This is the only way you will fully understand how the tool works and the risks it poses when using. Just like with hand tools, steer clear of anything flammable. It is important to always check for any hidden wires when using a bladed power tool. When using a power tool, always maintain your balance and never overreach. Never use a damaged power tool.

Now that we have discussed the proper safety precautions to take when using hand tools or power tools, you can feel confident working with them on any project!
